Ecclesiastes 9:5

Know You Will Die

- For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. -

Hey folks, sorry for dropping off the face of the earth this past week. I know that can be a bit unnerving considering me and Katie’s current experience with infertility.

In short, Katie had a surgery this Monday that I thought I would be able to write through. I was a bit ambitious.

We had some wonderful people stop by and take care of her, but it still ended up being a busy week (I’m sure she is rolling her eyes as she reads this too).

Anyway, we should be back to normal this week granted she recovers from COVID soon, and I don’t get it.

Did I mention it was a busy week?

You know, till I was twenty-five, I thought I was going to live forever. Okay not exactly like that. I always knew I was going to die, but not in a real sense.

I hadn’t made any provisions for the end of my life, like life insurance, or started taking care of my body as if it was going to wear down.

Realizing what mortality is comes in stages. I will die sometime. I could die anytime. That pain in my shoulder is going to be with me when I’m eighty.

What’s life going to be like when I can’t walk this fast? Will I start getting angry with people because I can’t realize my own limitations?

It’s not comforting. When you are young you have this fire burning in your belly, as if no matter what you put your mind to you can get it done.

But it’s stranger than that. You think that fire is going to last forever, or that you can always have time to do something meaningful with it.

And then, you surprise yourself with being older. Maybe it’s time to finally get serious.

Here’s the deal. It’s courageous to look at your life and realize it’s going to end. Why? Because it’s the only perspective that can allow you to do something meaningful with it.

Think you are going to last forever or have time for that goal later? That’s what kids tell themselves. You have now.

Well, how can you start living like this? Maybe the easiest way is just to see how many years you have left to live, on average.

Look up the average life expectancy in your country. Are you happy with the time you have left? Who in their right mind could ever be happy with that answer?

Well now think about something you want to get done. Not something like a bucket list. Think about something you think God is calling you to do before you die.

How many years do you think that is going to take? Are you ready to do it now? What do you need to accomplish to be ready for it?

Be a good steward of what God has given you. Sure, you can’t know everything, but you could start being faithful with the time you may have left.

Is it hard? Of course. But we are not called to have easy lives.

To not spend our years feasting is a required sacrifice for meaning.
